The 17 year periodic cicada emerges (you guessed it) every 17 years.
The rest of the time, its larvae live underground, but once they mature,
they come out to party-- er, I mean they come out to mate.
There are several "batches" of periodic cicadas that come out during
different years, called "broods". This year's emergence is due in late May.
They are mostly harmless, but the sheer numbers of cicadas that come
out make them a fairly big annoyance. They cover the yard, they cover the
road, they buzz their song of love CONSTANTLY. And, well, they're bugs.
BIG bugs.
Some people call the cicadas locusts, because they certainly seem to
be a plague, but that is a misnomer. They are a different insect.
People have found lots of uses for cicadas, they make good fishing bait,
and some people even say they are tasty to eat (ewwww!) and kids like to
play with them (when you're not looking!)
Special note for dog owners:
Watch out for your dog during the cicada swarm this summer. The cicada's
are not harmful per se, but, dogs being dogs, think that the bugs make
for a tasty food. Unattended, your dog may see the yard full of cicadas
as an unending snack! They will eat... and eat... and eat... and eat themselves
sick. And a dog full of cicadas getting sick in the house is something
NEITHER of you will enjoy!
